Damon Turney

Senior Scientist
City University of New York, Energy Institute

The City University of New York (CUNY) Energy Institute was formed in 2008 by Dr. Sanjoy Banerjee to continue and broaden the work of the existing CUNY Clean Fuels Institute lead by Professor Reuel Shinnar. Headquartered at the historic City College of New York, the CUNY Energy Institute engages a multidisciplinary science and engineering team with a focus on energy storage, nuclear science, and oil/gas research. The institute engages a diverse body of faculty and students, who are able to perform cutting-edge energy research at facilities located at City College, Hunter College and local collaborative facilities such as the New York Structural Biology Center and Brookhaven National Laboratory. The recent enegy storage startup company Urban Electric Power has spun out of the Energy Insitute and now employs 30 staff in nearby Harlem. Dr. Damon Turney has worked as a senior scientist at the institute since 2011 with a focus on advanced batteries for large-scale energy storage and small-scale gas-to-liquid fuel reactors. His previous work was located at Brookhaven National Laboratory and University of California, Santa Barbara.
